In the book, In the Spirit of the Studio, the authors describe a natural process that evolves out of the thoughtful and intentional planning of meaningful experiences. “We have discovered a cycle of inquiry that constantly re-emerges: an encounter between children and materials coincides with their imagination or interest, is recorded by a teacher or saved in an artifact, and is retold by children and teachers, which becomes a provocation to pursue the encounter into the future. It is a continuous cycle of perching and flying. Like birds landing and taking off, children and teachers survey the terrain and ascent in order to gain a new perspective” (Gandini, Hill, Cadwell, & Schwall, 2005, p.53). In this way, the form provided serves as a springboard to deeper thinking, exploration, and learning in the early childhood classroom.
Consider the chart below. We talked about connecting experiences with broader concepts, but what is the role of the adult in each lesson? Is it fully discovery-based? Is it guided by teacher modeling and prompting? Think about the values involved in each lesson. Is one of the elements of the experience independence? Is it to use available tools and support support? What are the characteristics of a lesson that make it child-guided or adult-guided? In the comment box below, briefly describe whether the lessons you planned leaned more towards child-guided or adult-guided learning and how you know.
