When we talk about concepts, we aren’t talking about facts, but bigger, broader ideas. Ask yourself: how can I make these concepts meaningful experiences for young children? What references or support materials will you need? Will field experiences support learning? When possible, connect your concepts and learning experiences to those relevant to the children in your classroom. For example, when studying ramps as part of a simple machines investigation, ask children to notice how many different ramps children notice on the playground or around the school. Connecting with local experts, whether they are parents, staff, or your friends and family, can elevate your concepts and learning experiences to be as accurate, deep, and meaningful as possible.
