In developing and researching concepts, consider some important factors. Did you select a topic worthy of study, relevant to children’s lives and interests? Do you have access to authentic materials that inspire inquiry? Have you anticipated ways to evaluate children’s learning and interests? Additionally, as you create curriculum, you should:
In the attached form, write down a list of the three top concepts you would like to explore in your classroom, ideally based on the observations you made in the Observing Play Schema PROTON. This is the same form you used in the ENERGIZE section—try to relate the concepts to what your children are interested in currently. Include also which related topics might be worth exploring, what resources you will need for content knowledge, and how you can ensure the experience is hands-on for the children.
- Talk with your teaching team about the culture of the classroom and the practice as it currently exists. Identify small changes that can be easily made to create a more inquiry-based, child centered classroom.
- Consider big ideas that are worthy of the children’s extended investigation and support their interests and the content standards or graded course of study.
- Select novel ideas that have not been part of common practice in other age/grade levels. For example, dinosaurs and butterflies can be high interest topics that are worthy of study. They are also over used and, because of their popularity, many children will have studied them in earlier years and will likely study them again in the future.
- Before thinking about how to teach a topic, make sure that you know the content related to your topic. Use teacher reference books, elementary/middle school science books, and websites to learn about your topic.
- Avoid diving into the activities or experiences before knowing what you are teaching.
