When writing objectives for early childhood lessons, include the specific actions children will take to reach those goals. Identify what children will be learning, developing, or practicing, as well as what sort of experiences in which they will be engaging. For example:
Children will develop new vocabulary skills by using the following terms exploring ramps: incline, ramp, start, predict.
Reading this objective, it is relatively easy to see an assessment emerging. In this case, it could be as simple as writing down the child’s actions and words, determining if the child uses the new vocabulary or if the actions will lead to discovery of the meaning of these new words. A rubric could be developed to support the documentation of this learning:
Thinking back to the video of children exploring with blocks and animals, work with your team to draft your own objectives for the video, as well as a rubric that could be used for similar lessons, using the attached form.
